Single-Stage Implant

Early Loading Implant

The best permanent replacement for a missing tooth is dental implants. But did you know there are two main techniques for placing implants? Implants can be placed using either a one-stage or two-stage surgical technique, and as their names suggest, one involves a single step while the other requires a second surgery.

In the two-stage implant procedure, a healing abutment is placed 3-6 months after the surgery. This abutment connects the implant from the bone to the inside of the mouth. After the 3 to 6 months healing period, during which the implant fuses with the bone, a dental prosthesis is made over the implant. Single-stage implant systems are usually applied when the bone quality is good and primary stability is high. In this system, there's no need to wait for months; patients can leave the clinic with their new teeth on the same day. Additionally, in cases where aesthetic restoration is required in the anterior region, a single-stage implant can be performed. A tooth can be created on the implant in the same session it is placed. Generally, waiting for a sufficient period until the implant has healed and fused well with the bone before subjecting it to biting forces is safer and wiser.

The two-stage implant approach can be used in posterior areas where aesthetics are not a concern. With this approach, the implants are placed in the jawbone and the gum tissues cover them. They are not exposed to the oral environment, being embedded in the bone, and left to heal. After healing, a second surgery is performed to attach an abutment to secure the dental prosthesis in place. This approach is used in cases with weaker bone quality or thickness.

Depending on your personal and medical situation, our implant team will determine the best approach for you. You can contact us for more information about these two procedures.
