HOW IS TEETH WHITENING PERFORMED?

Whitening can be done in the dental clinic or at home. Before office-type whitening, taking photos of the teeth is important for comparing the effectiveness of the whitening. Your dentist may also ask questions to understand the habits causing the discoloration.

Before the procedure in the clinic, a protective barrier is applied over the gums. Hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth and activated with a laser for 30 to 45 minutes. After rinsing the teeth and removing the gum barrier, your dentist will give you dietary advice. Office-type whitening shows teeth whitening in the same session. A repeat procedure may be recommended if necessary.

HOME-TYPE WHITENING

Before starting teeth whitening, tartar cleaning (detartrage) and mechanical stain removal are performed by a dentist. Transparent whitening trays are prepared from an impression taken of the teeth in the same session. Whitening gels are applied inside the prepared trays and placed in the mouth, activating the whitening process. The trays are left in the mouth for several hours and applied every other day to achieve the desired whiteness.

Additionally, you can purchase over-the-counter whitening products. These products contain a weaker whitening agent than what dentists use, so whitening may take longer.

POST-WHITENING CARE

Different sensitivity complaints can occur after teeth whitening, but this sensitivity is temporary and will disappear over time. It is advised to avoid extremely cold or hot foods and drinks for a few days after the whitening procedure. Avoiding foods that cause staining for about a week is beneficial, such as cola, tea, coffee, red wine, colored fruits, mustard and ketchup, colored meat sauces, red meat dishes, cocoa, and chocolate sweets, and smoking. Also, consuming acidic foods (like oranges, vinegar, tangerines) can increase sensitivity. Reducing the consumption of these foods plays an important role in maintaining the results of the whitening process.
